You open Google Maps, type "mobile repair near me" and pick one of the first three shops you see. Your customers do the same thing. If your shop is not on that map, they walk into someone else's.
This guide shows you how to create a Google Business Profile in about 30 minutes. It is free, it works from your phone, and you do not need a website to start. Keep your shop name board, a few photos and your phone handy.
What is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile is your shop's free listing on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, location, hours, phone number, photos and reviews in one box. Earlier it was called Google My Business, so you may still hear that name.
When someone searches for your shop or for a service like yours nearby, this box is often the first thing they see. It works like a shop board that stays open day and night.
How do I create a Google Business Profile step by step?
Go to google.com/business on your phone or computer, sign in with a Gmail account and follow the steps on screen. The whole setup takes about 30 minutes if your details are ready. Here is the order Google usually follows.
- Sign in. Use a Gmail account you will keep for years. Do not use a staff member's personal account.
- Search for your shop. Type your shop name. If it already appears, someone (maybe a customer or Google itself) created it. Choose "Claim this business" instead of making a new one.
- Enter your exact business name. Write it as it appears on your board. Do not add words like "best" or "cheapest".
- Pick your main category. For example, "Beauty salon", "Electronics store" or "Hardware store".
- Add your location. If customers visit you, enter your full address and set the pin on the map. If you visit customers (like an AC repair service), choose a service area and hide your home address.
- Add phone and website. Add the number you actually pick up. If you have no website yet, you can skip this or add one later.
- Verify. Google will ask you to prove the shop is yours. More on this below.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Verification can be quick or take a few days, depending on the method Google offers you. The most common method today is a short video recording from your phone. Some owners also get a phone, SMS or email option.
For video verification, record in one go without cuts. Show:
- Your shop name board from outside
- The street or a nearby landmark, so Google can match the location
- Inside the shop: your counter, products or tools of your trade
- Something that proves you manage it, like opening the shutter, the billing machine or a shop licence
After you submit, Google reviews it. Do not change your name or address while you wait, because that can restart the check.
Which details should I fill in after verification?
Fill in everything Google allows, because a complete profile gives customers fewer reasons to call someone else. Hours, photos and services matter the most for local shops. Do these on the same day.
Hours. Add your regular hours and your weekly off day. Add special hours for Diwali, Gudi Padwa or any festival closing. A customer who arrives at a shut shutter rarely comes back.
Photos. Add a clear outside photo so people can spot your shop on the road. Add inside photos, your best products, and you at work. Use real photos taken in daylight. Skip stock images.
Products and services. List what you actually sell or do. A salon can list haircut, facial and bridal makeup. A hardware shop can list paints, plumbing items and tools. You can add a price or write "price on enquiry".
Description. Write a few plain lines: what you do, which area you serve and what makes you useful. For example: "Laptop and mobile repair in Navi Peth, Solapur. Screen, battery and charging repairs. Same-day service for most phones."
Attributes. Tick the ones that are true, like "Accepts UPI", "Wheelchair accessible" or "Women-owned".
A simple example
Say a small electronics repair shop in Solapur sets up its profile on a Monday. It adds the shutter-up video for verification. Once verified, it adds hours with Sunday off, eight real photos, a list of ten repair services and a two-line description.
Now when someone nearby searches "phone screen repair", the shop has a full box with photos, timings and a call button. The owner did not spend money. He spent one evening.
How do I keep my Google profile active?
Open your profile once a week and do one small thing. Add a new photo, post an update, or reply to a new review. Small regular updates show Google and customers that the shop is open and cared for.
Ideas for weekly posts:
- A new stock arrival or a festival offer
- A before-and-after photo of a repair or a haircut
- A reminder of holiday timings
Older profiles had a separate Questions and Answers section. Google has been replacing it with answers built from your own profile details, reviews and website. That is one more reason to keep your description, services and hours complete and correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding keywords or city names to your business name
- Making a second profile for the same shop
- Using a home address for a walk-in shop that is somewhere else
- Leaving the phone number of a staff member who has left
- Forgetting to update hours during festivals

FAQ
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Be careful of callers who ask for money to verify your listing on Google's behalf.
Can I create a Google Business Profile without a website?
Yes. A website is optional. You can add one later, and a simple website does help customers who want more detail before they visit.
What if my shop is already on Google Maps?
Search for it on google.com/business and choose "Claim this business". Then verify it so you can control the details.
Can I manage my profile from my phone?
Yes. Search your shop name on Google or open Google Maps while signed in, and you can edit details, add photos and reply to reviews from there.
What should I do if verification fails?
Check that your name and address match your shop board exactly. Record a clearer video showing the board, the street and the inside of the shop, then try again.
